“Save the Best for Last” is a heartfelt essay that tells how one lovable Granddad taught my busy family how to keep life rolling along, even if it’s the end of the road. Look for it in this latest anthology.

Flip to the first chapter of this book, and you'll see "Who? Me? Starting A Writing Group From Scratch." In this piece, I explain how I began a group for children's writers. The remaining chapters will give you insight into different types of groups, what keeps them going, and more. |

Writers often describe their manuscripts, submissions, queries, rejections, and more using real words with twisted definitions. For example, the word "eject" is usually a verb meaning to throw out with force, but do you know that writers refer to an "eject" (noun) as an electronic rejection? I've discovered over 100 of these silly writerisms in the last five years. Writer's Digest will feature a few in the InkWell section one of these days. |

You have a list of things to do once it's time to buzz your first book. But what can you do now, before you're under a deadline to create a buzz for a particular project? "Before the Buzz" offers budding authors advice on organization, Web sites, blogging, and more. It will be published the SCBWI Bulletin in the future. |

Coming soon to Once Upon A Time are two pieces that originally appeared as part of the Institute of Children's Literature's Rx for Writers. "Dressed to Thrill" is a humorous essay about what to pack for an overnight conference. "The Children's Publishing Merry-Go-Round, Ten Exercises to Help Picture Book Writers Hang On" is an article for writers who are concerned about the industry's lack of focus on picture books.
Also forthcoming is "Email Imbecility," a short poem for anyone who hits that SEND button much too quickly.
“Train of Thought” is another poem that appears in the Spring 2007 issue. |
