“Save the Best for Last” is a heartfelt essay that tells how one lovable Granddad taught my busy family how to keep life rolling along, even if it’s the end of the road. Look for it in this latest anthology.

Flip to the first chapter of this book, and you'll see "Who? Me? Starting A Writing Group From Scratch." In this piece, I explain how I began a group for children's writers. The remaining chapters will give you insight into different types of groups, what keeps them going, and more.

Writers often describe their manuscripts, submissions, queries, rejections, and more using real words with twisted definitions. For example, the word "eject" is usually a verb meaning to throw out with force, but do you know that writers refer to an "eject" (noun) as an electronic rejection? I've discovered over 100 of these silly writerisms in the last five years. Writer's Digest will feature a few in the InkWell section one of these days.

You have a list of things to do once it's time to buzz your first book. But what can you do now, before you're under a deadline to create a buzz for a particular project? "Before the Buzz" offers budding authors advice on organization, Web sites, blogging, and more. It will be published the SCBWI Bulletin in the future.

Look for "Facing the Feedback" coming to the Institute of Children's Literature Rx for Writers in June 2008. Find out how to graciously receive a critique, even if the person providing the critique gives you much more than you bargained for.

Coming soon to Once Upon A Time are two pieces that originally appeared as part of the Institute of Children's Literature's Rx for Writers. "Dressed to Thrill" is a humorous essay about what to pack for an overnight conference. "The Children's Publishing Merry-Go-Round, Ten Exercises to Help Picture Book Writers Hang On" is an article for writers who are concerned about the industry's lack of focus on picture books.

Also forthcoming is "Email Imbecility," a short poem for anyone who hits that SEND button much too quickly.

“Train of Thought” is another poem that appears in the Spring 2007 issue.

Click on “Gathering Seeds” to read my essay/article that appears in Kid Magazine Writers. This fun take on collecting and storing “seeds” is actually for writers, not gardeners.

“You Want An Agenda?” is a silly piece about my typical writing day. It’s been published in Absolute Write, an online newsletter for writers.

Kids who visit my house on Halloween create a personal snack from some very strange ingredients. Check out "My Great Idea" in the October 2006 issue of FamilyFun, a magazine for the whole family. For a sneak peek, click HERE.

“Ten Tried and True Tips for Tutus” explains unique ways kids can reuse those ballerina skirts. Parents will love getting the most out of an expensive investment! Look for this article online in May 2007.

We can encourage healthy habits at home, but what happens when our kids head out the door? Read “A New School of Thought” in the September 2005 issue of Parents Express.

Find out what really goes on when your teens are instant messaging. Read "Instantly Mean" in the March 2005 issue of Family Circle.

My work frequently appears in

Raising children takes time and energy, but I managed to get away for some peace and quiet. Check out my essay "The Spa Thing" that's featured on the Boomer Women Speak Web site.
